Darker than BLACK ‐黒の契約者 (Darker than BLACK – Kuro no Keiyakusha) is one of the series that I really look forward to this season.

In Tokyo, an impenetrable field known as “Hell’s Gate” appeared ten years ago. At the same time, psychics who wield paranormal powers at the cost of their conscience also emerged. Hei is one of the most powerful of these psychic agents, and along with his blind associate, Yin, works for one of the many rival agencies vying to unlock the mysteries of Hell’s Gate.

What really made it more appealing to me is…

Opening Theme:
“HOWLING” by abingdon boys school

Ending Theme:
“Tsukiakari” by Rie fu

I really loved the OP as it really had the nice tempo to the song. The lyrics of the song also went very well with the sequence. Well~ I’ve seen quite a few fansubs subbing this series and when I looked at the translation of the song, it was slightly off, especially at the English lyrics. I’ll provide the lyrics in my upcoming post after I check the official lyrics from my copy of Animedia.

As for the ED, it was slow like always, as expected of Rie fu, but it gave a real calm feeling to Yin in the seqeunce.

The animation is great. I loved the way the tinted the surroundings with green to blend in nicely. Of course other shows had their own style. Like Venus Versus Virus, they had the purple tint to go with the night scenes. For Shakugan no Shana, they had the red tint for their scenes.

At the start of the show, we’re greeted with a nice scene of the night sky with a young girl, standing at a lake. We don’t know who she is yet though but I suppose we’ll know when the time comes.

It then gets redirected to a scene of a persuit. We’re introduced to a one type of people called the Contractors, whereby they have special powers. Of course the other kind of people, Dolls, that are a kind of medium. They also mentioned about the Hell’s Gate. From here, Hei and Yin gets introduced into the story.

Soon later, we get introduced to the police force and we get to know more about the Contractors and what they can do. And we’re introduced to a character called Kirihara Misaki, a member in the police force.

We get back to Hei, being an ordinary person and moving into a new place. He uses another identity and calls himself Lee Shanshun, an exchange student.

Shinoda is then featured and introduced to the story, which seems to be related to what happened to the persuit earlier on. I doubt she will play a major role in the overall plot. As she leaves the place, we see an introduction of another character.

A black cat walking pass her as she comes out of the apartment. Yes. The neko, Mao.

Soon, the last guy of the association that Hei works with, Hoan, appears and the whole crew is shown.

We’re soon shown the other side of Haraguchi, where she works at a night club. It soon turns out into another persuit and she gets caught, not by the police, but by someone she knows. Hei manged to helped her escape from the police but got taken down by one of the guys, Jean, that caught Haraguchi.

She managed to escape with the help from Mao and meet up with Hei, who survived from the attack.

She seems to be glad to see Hei and she gets embraced by him.

The soundtrack was nice as it manages to give a sense of a mysterious sad feeling. It feels very peaceful and serene.

I would recommend Darker than BLACK ‐ 黒の契約者 to you. It’s really a great show and I feel that it has a great potential.

It’s actually Huan not Hoan isn’t it?

  2. bj0rN Says:

I’m quite sure its Hoan since there’s no Hu in the hiragana pronoucation. Only Fu. It’s Ha Hi Fu He Ho. So it should be Hoan and not Fuan.

  3. hei Says:

it is huang because they say fuan in the episodes

  4. NightFox Says:

But isn’t the Fu similarly like Hu? For the japanese I think they’re somewhat similar since ‘hu’ sounds more like ‘fu’ Although it’s moreso with ‘fu’ nowadays.

  5. me Says:

yah, my japanese teacher (from japan, so you’d hope she knows) says that ‘fu’ and ‘hu’ are interchangeable.
