ODEX Revealing Eveything Or Not?

Filed under: Anime, Blog, Random, Rant — bj0rN @ 13:35

Sorry for the slightly late post since I stayed out the whole day yesterday, slacking at Cosafe at night till early morning.

Woke up in the morning and heard alot of people ranting about an article on our local tabloid yesterday. So I took at look at the article. I’m not sure if this is ODEX’s story or the reporter trying to make up something just to put it on the tabloid. Loads of “nice information” regarding the market in America and all which makes no sense as they have no link with the current situation and market in Singapore.

Well~ This article is not accurate at all. My friends and I were discussing about it and found out alot of flaws in this.

What I find stupid is, the reporter just took some “nice information” and splat it there thinking that it’s all related to the post.

What does the drop of anime episodes released in DVDs in America have to do ODEX’s sales anyway?! And if they are trying to say that piracy is causing the drop of anime episodes being released, that’s rubbish! I’m quite sure they are doing quite well over in America. They are not cheapskates like the stereotypical Singaporeans anyway. Not only that, 2005 was the year where alot of anime series were produced thus companies made significant loses, resulting in more selective title releases in 2006. I mean~ Why bother releasing so many when most of them don’t make sales at all when you can just the good once that you’re confident that is it able to bring in money? Not only that, they might have brought in the older series and when 2006 came, there wasn’t really much to release, thus sticking to the newer and popular animes that they think is worth investing on.

No mention of AVPAS was on the article too. And I just can’t believe that ODEX made their product sound so godly and worth buying when we all know that even the R1s and R2s are so much better compared to their. And… the series they released are either old or crappy and not worth watching.

The only way I think they can boost their sales is to do something like what the R1 is like and perhaps add in the Chinese or Malay dubs if they have to since they want to cater the Singaporeans, consisting of people from different races. Not only that, it could do well in South-East Asia too.

Then again, they are probably gonna blame piracy as the main cause of their losses. I don’t see why America and Japan is doing so well with those factors taken into consideration.

Well~ Here are my views for now, of course feel free to join in the discussion since I’m really interested what other people think and all.

I’ve read on elsewhere that some similar unknown companies tried to file charges against people torrenting anime episodes instead of buying them. Of course they were charges against american citizens, and went no where…

But I find this interesting that a below-average…(anime company thing? whatever it is) would try to do this, and yet I have yet to read any major company try this.

But then again, as an american, news stories do not really focus on anime…at all.

“[…] to say that privacy is causing the drop […]” ― you wanted to write “piracy”, right?

Anyway, they should just concentrate on making their products better instead of fighting against their potential customers. Thank God, I’m not living in Singapore.

  6. wKr Says:

    to hell with Odex..

  7. tragic comedy Says:

it seems that no matter what people will bash odex irregardless of the actual focus of the issue…

Oh noes my newspaper scan is here! lol

  9. Qadir Says:

ROFL didn’t ANN just reported that FUNimation is actually making great profits??

It’s simply ODEX that sucks hard. Losers who still refuses to admit that their products are crap and blaming the poor sales on ‘piracy’.

Anyways, I don’t think adding in Chinese or Malay dubs will do any good. It’s general knowledge that the Chinse dubs available is realy lousy. And if theyre gonna rip the Malay dubs from M’sia..er.. have you ppl seen Malay dubs of Naruto “-_- Horible.

What they should do, is have ENGLISH subtitles and as for the dual audio, put in Japanese and AMERICAN English.

The English dub in One Piece is emotionless and flat. Get the ones done by FUNi or Viz (not 4Kids :p).

Yeah, getting the dubs from there could be hard, but I wouln’t mind paying a tad more knowing that I can get to wtch it in Jap w/ Eng. subs as well as seeing decent American English.

Choice quotes by Odex (Stephen Sing and Peter Go)…

A character with the online nick “xysing” has been found saying some interesting things in online forums.
    “Nope~ Me too busy sueing people~ (o.o)y”
“Hahahahah! I double-6-ed so many downloaders~ serve them right! (o.o)y”

The best we can do now is to just STFU and see what odex does next.
Hopefully they would look more into what the anime fans are trying to appeal.
And try to condone with our what we want gradually.

Its not a matter of being a coward or anything.
Its the matter of whats the optimal thing to do now.
Even if someone really manage to counter sue odex back and win the case. (very unlikely)
It proves nothing except that there are loopholes in how Odex is handling this matter.
Yes, glory and hounour might shine on whoever that wins the case. And people from HWZ will look upon him as a hero.
But all in all. It will not help the community. Downloading will afterall still be illegal.
The government might even start to get paranoid about this online piracy case. And tighten up on online piracy laws.
I seriously dont think they will start to think
“oh how sad, a 9year old boy has been sued. Lets make the copyright law more lenient.”

Shouting i hate odex and acting like a retard does not help.
Everyone please do not follow the sheeps in HWZ.

And i am sure we all know of the issue on quality.
Its pointless to dig it up again and again.
    it will not help.

Our main aim now is to save the anime community.
    And not fight with odex.

Fighting with odex =/= saving the anime community.

    Cheers.

I hope odex know whats they are doing since lots of young children are dling anime too behind their parents back. i expect more children to go to boys homes if they cannot afford the sue.

Isn’t there the argument that an IP address does not equal an individual? If it can be demonstrated that one can hijack another person’s wireless signal to download anything, then there is reasonable doubt that the list of IP addresses that Odex obtained is not useful, and therefore cannot be used to compel ISPs to reveal customers’ names. The accused can also use the same argument to show that Odex has not proven beyond reasonable doubt that the download was initiated by the accused.

  14. anime justice 1 Says:

Why does no one stand up to odex and countersue them. Firstly, their dubbing is taken from fansubs and not done by themselves. Taking the work of others is called COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT which odex has done by not doing the dubbing of the animes they sell and instead copying the dubbing of fansubs word for word.

  15. Lizeth Says:
