3ZENIN DAZO?!
A fanart of Sanzenin Nagi from Hayate no Gotoku. Anyway it is a art trade with pcmaniac in Deviantart so he should have one ready soon haha. Now I will show a very rough steps on how to do this CG >.<
First of all every CG needs to have at least a sketch to start the line art. So here I got a very rough sketch of Nagi sketch on a paper. You can also do your sketch digitally too, this is up to personal preference. After that just scan at at least 300dpi and do some contrast adjustment in Photoshop.
After you save as PSD file, import to SAI and do the line art. There are no tricks in transforming your sketch into something so neat. All you have to do is use your tablet, select the pen/pencil tool and draw. Of cos do it in a separate layers above your sketch and lower your sketch layer opacity so u can line out better. The reason I use SAI to do the line art is because they have better sensitivity and they can auto smoothen your lines so it won’t look jagged when you zoom in. Another thing is by holding ALT+ SPACE BAR, you can turn your camera so u can draw difficult lines in a better angle.
After this I do the line art for the background. REMEMBER TO GROUP YOUR LAYERS WELL so u won’t get messy order at the end of the day. Hide your character line art to see your background clearly.
After you finish all your line art, Do all the base colors with each colors on different layers and folder. If you did your lineart well you should be able to magic wand select the area in the line art and just bucket it with the color. Group each base colors layer in different folders. Base color is EXTREMELY important in CG. Do this well and it will help your CG process A LOT later on.
So here is the colored version of the background. Don’t be stunt by the fast development for this step >.< This is because coloring the background is entire depends on individual’s artistic skill. With the help of just brush and eraser, this can be done. Anyway next steps should help u understand how to do all these better.
Alright, so after you have done the background, you can put your character in. The reason i did the background first for this CG is because I want to know the direction of the light source and the shadows. If your computer RAM and graphic card is not good enough, I advise u to merge the background first.
From here on you can do your CG entirely on Photoshop now. Now I will touch on the shading process for the skin. First, go to the skin folder and select your skin base color by holding ctrl+click on the layer image. You will see dotted lines around your skin base color after you have successful selected it.
Now, create another layer in the same folder and do your shading with the selecting on. Now you will realize the your shading will not go over your base color selection. This is the reason why doing a good base color affect the rest of you cg. For skin, choose a color that is more pinkish than the base color. DO NOT CHOOSE ORANGE OR DARKER SHADE OF BASE. For second base color shading always choose color from the top of the color chart and also never use burn tool. If you are not happy with you colors, you can always select the shaded layers and do color balance located below the layer window or u can do level by pressing ctrl+L. Do the soft shading by using eraser and lower the flow and opacity to erase the colors again and again to get the effects right. Use soft eraser for more a smoother effects.
After this do another darker shade. Also use color balance and levels to get the color you want. REMEMBER TO DO EVERY SHADE ON SEPARATE LAYERS.
Now do the lighting, blush and the mouth. As you can see I use the same yellow as the background. By doing the background first I will know which color of the light I can choose and which direction it will shine on. In science, you know that object reflect light so you see it in this way. Just imagine that the skin is a bit like a mirror and it reflect the colors around it to your eyes.
The next step is just a very extra steps for the CG. I added a very light opacity blue on the skin to reflect the other side of the background. The purpose of this is just to give more colors on the skin and also to do a contrast between the skin warm colors and a bit of cooler colors.
TADA! Just use the same method throughout the whole CG and you will get everything done. I skip all the other parts because I think this will continue on forever. For now just try it out on you own and see if you can get it first. The next time, I might do a tutorial on eyes and hair since these two are quite complex to do it. Anyway, after the CG, you can color your line art to fit each part of the colors by locking you line art above the layer window and just use brush to add colors on it.
Anyway this is in my DA too, so please comment it if you have a account there ^^.
Also there will be prints for this CG in Singapore and Malaysia only.
